Expectations of Samohi ASB Leadership
Members of ASB Leadership are required to enroll in the 4th Period Student Leadership / Government class. This college preparatory, G Elective, course has all the same requirements as other classes and will include assignments relating to leadership issues as well as individual roles, for which participants will receive a grade. Executive ASB President Duties
- Facilitates and runs daily student government class ASB Exec VP
- Acts as chief representative for Samohi, in and out of school
- Meets daily with the Activities Director
- Meets weekly/regularly with ASB Execs and Activities Director outside of class to plan schedule of activities for the Leadership class
- Incorporates community building activities / ice breakers in leadership class weekly
- Plans, runs and moderates retreats, projects and other ASB events throughout year
- Models exemplary citizenship/behavior and leadership qualities for peers to follow
- Collaborates and communicates effectively with a variety of stakeholders (peers, teachers, admin, community members, etc)
- Able to thrive and show leadership under pressure / hard deadlines
- Runs and moderates student elections with admin and Activities Director
- Assumes or delegates responsibilities of other ASB execs in their absence
- Speaks at assemblies and school-wide events
- Serves as a liaison between students and administration
- Oversees execs, officer responsibilities and assists with ASB member evaluations
- Communicates and collaborates with ASB's from neighboring schools for combined events and publicity
- Runs ASB class as needed for planning activities
- Must be comfortable speaking in front of a group
- Must be able to take charge when needed and hold classmates accountable
- Helps monitor other execs to verify they are fulfilling job responsibilities
- Supervises or delegates supervision of all ASB activities
- Supervises or delegates supervision of committee chairpersons to establish and enforce timelines and deadlines
- Sets goals for all other ASB officers
- Works well with peers, play mediator in any situation, and always strive to improve Samohi spirit
- Dress up for all dress-up days
- Be prepared for weekend and evening commitments as well as times when regular class periods will be missed to assist with ASB responsibilities
- Helps form all needed committees
- Oversees selected ASB committees and evaluations
- Keeps ongoing documentation (logs, notes, agenda, etc) of committee supervision to share with ASB President, Activities Director, others
- Commits to continual growth as a leader by completing assignments assigned by the Director of Student Activities and participating in leadership development seminars and conferences when possible.
Executive ASB Vice President Duties
- Helps Student Body President in all activities/responsibilities (see above)
- Report directly to the ASB president and the Activities Director
- Stands in for Student Body President if they are absent
- Assists in moderating ASB Leadership discussions
- Oversees class cabinets
- Oversees officer responsibilities, projects, and evaluations
- Keeps ongoing documentation (logs, notes, agenda, etc) of committee supervision to share with ASB President, Activities Director, others
- Represent the student body at ALL school activities and events

- Must support and contribute to Samohi spirit and pride at ALL times

- Supervise the ASB secretary in taking minutes at steering meetings
- Maintain class calendars of activities for class Student Government
- Assist the ASB president in coordinating and conducting activities

Executive ASB Secretary Duties
- Reports to ASB President and the Activities Director
- Represents the student body at ALL school activities and events
- Meets weekly with Execs and Activities Director to plan schedule of activities for the Leadership class
- Must support and contribute to Samohi spirit and pride at ALL times
- Required attendance at Student Government meetings
- Participate in planning and attending all ASB events
- Monitors class secretaries to verify they are fulfilling the responsibilities of the office
- Comfortable talking in front of a group
- Must be able to take charge when needed and hold classmates accountable when needed
- Record and distribute minutes from all student government meetings
- Minutes must be typed, shared and distributed to Student Government members, class advisors, Activities Director & House Principal
- Assist with all official correspondence with other schools, organizations and businesses
- Familiar with Robert’s Rules of Orders, ASB Constitution, bylaws, and all voting and election procedures
- Keep and maintain all official documents (minutes, contracts, etc.)
- Models exemplary citizenship/behavior and leadership qualities for peers to follow

ASB Treasurer Duties
- Reports to ASB President and Activities Director
- Represent the student body at school activities and events
- Meets weekly with Execs and Activities Director to plan schedule of activities for the Leadership class
- Required attendance at all Student Government meetings
- Participate in planning and attending all ASB events
- Monitors class treasurers to verify they are fulfilling the responsibilities of the office
- Must be comfortable talking in front of a group.
- Must be able to take charge when needed and hold classmates accountable when needed.
- Keep and maintain all financial documents (minutes, financial reports, contracts, POs, etc.)
- Familiar with Robert’s Rules of Orders, ASB Constitution, bylaws, and all voting and election procedures
- Develop and organize ASB fundraisers
- Assist the school secretary in maintaining an accurate accounting of all ASB accounts
- Signs or acquires signatures of all accounting paperwork for all ASB accounts, POs and invoices
- Oversee all financial record keeping for Student Government
- Develops an annual budget based on previous year’s spending
- Models exemplary citizenship/behavior and leadership qualities for peers to follow

- Works with the ASB Advisor and ASB Financial Officer to oversee that organizations and athletic teams keep within their budget limits.
- Responsible for printing and reporting account details for weekly balance reports at ASB meetings.
- Responsible for making sure clubs are turning in fundraiser requests and keeping track of fundraisers.
- Responsible for keeping copies of all checks with proper backup in ASB Financial office/Vike's Inn

Student Member of the Board Representative Duties
- Attends and participates in regular School Board Meetings; delivers student reports
- Reviews Board Agendas before meetings and elicits student feedback on agenda items
- Advises Board and Superintendent on student viewpoint
- Represents Board to student body on issues where Board has voiced a formal opinion/ made a decision
- Informs student body on Board/District-related news; organizes student participation for Board events as needed
- Advises ASB on potential actions to garner student input and involvement at all levels of administration
- Schedule and attend regular meetings with Superintendent and regular meetings with the school principal before each meeting.
- Organizes meetings between Board members, district officials, and students as needed
- Reports to ASB on meetings and helps connect ASB with the Board and district leadership
- Models exemplary citizenship/behavior and leadership qualities for peers to follow

- Represents interests of their class in ASB and communicates regularly with class members
- Holds regular class council / steering meetings, as well as all-class meetings as needed
- Arranges class merch design, sale through student activities office, and distribution
- Organizes community builders, games and competitions for class
- Manages class funds and organizes fundraisers (grams, bake sales, grant writing, etc.)
- Recruits class membership throughout year
- Maintains a social media presence that promotes the diversity of class members at Samohi
- Carries out special class duties with class councils (senior assembly, freshmen orientation, lunch activities, etc)
Class Vice Presidents (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th) Duties
- Helps president in all activities/responsibilities (see above)
- Assists in leading class council/steering (see above)
- Is responsible for ensuring class council minutes are taken and posted
- Stand-in for presidents when necessary
- Works closely with Class President to make sure they represent their class well
General Responsibilities of all ASB Cabinet Officers and Commissioners
- Help with school-wide events (e.g. Homecoming, Dances, Lunch Activities, Rallies, etc.) by running games, decorating, cleaning up, and any other assigned tasks
- Dress up for all dress-up days
- Represent their class and/or the ASB Student Body as a whole
- Supports class council/all-class events as needed
- Regular attendance in class to discuss issues relating to school climate and policy
- Support final decisions made by group consensus
- Discuss and approve school group events
- Discuss and approve ASB and campus budgets
- Participate in and complete all class assignments
- Help publicize projects and events
- Participate in Steering/ School/ District committee meetings as assigned
- Works well with peers and to improve Samohi spirit
- Be prepared for weekend and evening commitments as well as times when regular class periods will be missed to assist with ASB responsibilities.
